Entry Gate Competition

A competition was hosted for an entry gate to announce The Presence of the Past exhibition at Fort Mason Center. The winning entry by local firm Crosby, Thornton & Marshall was selected from 171 submissions. The gate had a 12-foot satellite communications dish hooked up to a television streaming Italian broadcasts, and an argon laser supported on a metal frame. The laser was conceived to send a “time capsule” of light packets into space.

After the exhibition, the entry gate was relocated to the di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art in Napa, where it has become a ruin.
