Archetype

Archetype published a special issue on The Presence of the Past exhibition in Spring 1982. The San Francisco-based magazine, which ran from 1979-1983 was edited by Diane Ghirardo, Dementra Bowles, Henry Bowles, as well as Andrew Batey and Mark Mack—who were the designers of the exhibition installation at Fort Mason Center and contributed a new facade design. The magazine featured various articles about the Venice Biennale, the efforts to bring the exhibition to San Francisco, and critical reflections by Kenneth Frampton and interviews with curator Paolo Portoghesi and critic Charles Jencks.

The issue included black and white photographs by Richard Sexton, some of the only photographs of the San Francisco exhibition that have ever been previously published.

The magazine has been digitized and is available through USModernist Library.
